How to play

Suguru, also called Tectonic, is a number puzzle from Japan. There are two rules, no maths and no guessing. The quickest way to learn is to solve a tiny one.

Try it

Step 1 of 4

A block holds 1 up to its size, once each. The top block has 3 cells, and 1 and 3 are taken. Tap the glowing cell, then the missing number.

The rules

Each block holds 1 up to its size

The grid is split into blocks with thick outlines. A block of 3 cells holds 1, 2 and 3, once each. A block of 5 holds 1 to 5.

Equal numbers never touch

The same number can't sit next to itself in any direction, including corner to corner. A cell's eight neighbours can never share its number.

Clues get you started

Some numbers are printed on the board in bold. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, and you can always reach it by reasoning.

Solving tips

  • Start with small blocks. A block of 2 next to a clue often settles itself straight away.
  • Ask what a cell can't be. Rule out numbers already in its block and numbers touching it. When one number is left, that's the answer.
  • Ask where a number can go. If a block needs a 4 and only one of its cells can take it, the 4 goes there.
  • Use notes. Pencil in the options for a cell. When you place a number, it disappears from the notes around it.

There's more, with worked examples, in the solving techniques guide.

Controls

On a phone or tablet

Tap a cell, then a number. Tap Notes to pencil in options instead, and Erase to clear a cell. Undo steps back one move.

With a keyboard

Arrow keys move · 1–5 fill a cell · Shift + a number adds a note · N switches notes on and off · ⌫ erases · Ctrl Z (⌘ Z on a Mac) undoes

Checking and restarting

There's no submit button: the puzzle checks itself as soon as every cell is filled. If two equal numbers touch, or a block has a repeat, the number is underlined in red. You can turn that off in Settings. To start over, use Restart puzzle in the ⋯ menu.

The daily puzzle

  • One a day, the same for everyone. A new puzzle arrives at midnight UTC.
  • It gets harder through the week. Monday is gentle, Saturday is tough, and Sunday is big but steady.
  • Your progress is saved. Close the tab and come back later; your numbers and your time carry on where you left them.
  • Keep a streak. Log in or sign up (it's free) and every day you solve adds to your streak and stats.
  • Share your result. Each square of the result card is a cell of the board: dark for a clue, green for a cell you filled once, yellow for one you had to change.
